Importance of Oral Hygiene
Adult gum diseases can start as early as age 18. Approximately 75% of the adult population in the United States have some form of gum disease. Early gum disease (commonly called gingivitis) is curable; moderate and severe gum diseases are not curable. These latter two types of gum diseases are called trench mouth, pyorrhea, or periodontitis.
Most gum problems are highly manageable. The bulk of healthy gum management can be accomplished without the help of a dentist or dental hygienist. Basic oral hygiene is very effective; consistent effort, frequency of oral hygiene, and proper techniques are the keys.
