In my last blog on Invisalign, I introduced the basics of the Invisalign technique. I explained how we make records for treatment, develop a computer assisted treatment plan called a “Clincheck”, and how Aligners are used to move teeth. In this blog post, I want to discuss the advantages of Invisalign treatment over similar treatment with braces.
There are several major advantages for using Invisalign instead of metal or ceramic braces.
- The first advantage is that Invisalign aligners are not easily seen. This unequivocally allows for the best esthetics during treatment.
- The second advantage is that hygiene or caring for your teeth and gums is much easier with Invisalign than with braces. Patients practice the same oral hygiene we recommend for our patients that aren’t in treatment for orthodontics.
- The third advantage is that there is less gear or hardware associated with Invisalign. Invisalign does not require the use of headgear or elastics to move teeth. As I wrote in an earlier blog, each aligner moves teeth by itself. Each Aligner makes subtle movements in the teeth that need to be moved.
- The fourth advantage in using Invisalign is comfort. Oftentimes wires and brackets that are used with braces cause mouth sores on the insides of the lips and cheeks. This is avoided by Invisalign’s aligners that are made of smooth and flexible plastic that slip over teeth like a glove. This makes this technique comfortable and very convenient.
The fifth advantage of Invisalign treatment is lowered cost as compared to braces. The cost of Invisalign is about a third less than similar treatment with braces. With this savings in mind, patients can choose several options for dentistry after completing Invisalign treatment. Patients can continue on to esthetic dentistry. For example, patients can bleach their teeth. This is a very safe technique and can make teeth up to seven times whiter than before bleaching. If a patient has chipped or misshaped teeth present, the savings can be put toward veneers that would give their teeth better cosmetics. Sometimes patients have missing teeth so the savings can be put toward replacing missing teeth with dental implants or bridges. Finally, and maybe best of all options, patients can just keep the money they saved by choosing Invisalign over other forms of treatment.
Anyway you look at it, Invisalign treatment is a breeze when compared to similar treatments that use braces. So why wait?
