Have you had your two cleaning and checkups with your dentist this year? It’s recommended that patients visit their dentist every six months for routine preventive care. Did you know that these appointments are typically covered by your dental insurance? That’s right! That means there’s no out of pocket cost to you for maintaining your oral health. Here’s more information on how to make the most of your dental benefits.
Dental Insurance 101
In order to maximize your benefits, you must first understand how they work. While every plan is unique, most of them run on a calendar year, which means they start in January and end in December. Most plans cover most, if not all of your preventive appointments, and will pay a percentage of treatment procedures. Many plans have a yearly deductible to be met before they cover treatment as well.
Each year you’ll have a maximum amount of dollars that can be paid for treatment and preventive care, and unfortunately, these dollars do not transfer or roll over to the next year. You have to use them or lose them, and that’s why this is the best time of year to schedule any treatment you might need so you can make the most of your benefit dollars before they go away and your deductible renews.
HMO versus PPO
What is the difference between an HMO plan and a PPO? It’s all about the networks and which dentists your plan allows you to see. A PPO, or Preferred Provider Organization, allows you more flexibility in choosing the doctors you work with. An HMO, or Health Maintenance Organization, typically requires you to see provider within their network in order to receive coverage. You can find out which networks your dentist participates in by calling their office and speaking with their insurance coordinator.
Why Preventive Appointments are Important
Did you know that many dental issues such as cavities can actually be avoided? It’s true! With consistent cleanings and checkups every six months, your dentist can detect many issues like tooth decay, gum disease, and oral cancer in their earliest stages, which gives you the opportunity to take advantage of less invasive treatment procedures.
If you’re not sure about your remaining benefits or outstanding treatment needs, give your dentist a call today so you can make the most of your benefits before the end of the year.
