Woman in the dental chair having an examination. With the holidays upon us, it’s a busy time of year. It’s also the end of the year, which means that your dental insurance will be renewing soon. Have you had your two routine cleaning and checkup appointments this year? Do you have any outstanding treatment that needs to be done such as a dental filling or crown? Don’t let your dental insurance go to waste when your dentist can help you maximize your benefits and get the treatment you need!

How Dental Insurance Works

While every dental plan is unique, most have some standard features such as a yearly maximum paid for treatment, and some have a deductible to be met before treatment can be paid for. Most plans use a calendar year system, which means that they start in January and end in December.

January is the time when your deductible renews, and you receive a new yearly maximum, however, if you didn’t use your maximum last year, those benefit dollars are lost because they don’t roll into the next year. So it’s important to make the most of your insurance dollars before the end of the year if you haven’t already.

What Does My Insurance Pay For?

Most dental plans cover most, if not all of your preventive appointments, which are your six-month cleaning and checkups. This means that you don’t have to pay anything for these appointments, so it’s in your best interest to take advantage of them!

Consistent preventive appointments allow your dentist to properly monitor your oral health and detect any concerns early on. Often you are able to avoid the need for complex or costly treatment procedures by being proactive about your preventive care.

Insurance will typically pay a percentage of restorative dental treatment, and that amount varies between plans. If you have treatment to be completed, it’s wise to schedule it now before your deductible renews, and you lose your remaining benefit dollars for 2017.
