I have had the opportunity to see a lot of innovative treatments in dentistry over the years. Certainly the use of metal free fillings and crowns and Invisalign (invisible braces) represent fantastic advancements. Truly remarkable as well are dental implants. These are fabulous replacements or facsimiles for missing teeth.
Dental implants were put into widespread use in Europe about forty years ago. They originally were used only to anchor dentures. When the technology found its way to the US, we developed it to replace teeth all over the mouth. Much of the technology is based on the biological uses of titanium and various configurations of porcelain. We have found that the gums and jaws have a positive attraction to fuse to titanium and accept it without allergic responses. This is the essence of the dental implant.
Once the implant is established as integrated into the jaw, we can build natural-looking porcelain crowns (teeth) on them. It seems simple these days, but it has taken a lot of scientific research to make it seem so straightforward. In many instances dental implants are the preferred treatment over root canals, fixed or removable bridges. It is even commonplace to support a full set of beautiful and durable teeth over four implants. This is referred to as ”full on four”.
Implants generally need very little maintenance over time. They do need daily home care and professional cleanings at least twice per year. By following that regimen, they tend to provide years of reliable service at a high level. They look, feel and function very much like natural teeth. They even have one important advantage over natural teeth in that they cannot decay.
In our office we offer implants for replacing missing teeth and unsavable teeth as the preferred method of treatment. We like this because usually we don’t have to drill enamel off of other healthy teeth to place implants.
If you have been thinking of dental implants, come see us for a free consultation. Our office has been restoring people’s mouths with implants for over 25 years. We are one of the few dental offices in our area that can take care of all your implant needs under one roof.
