BleachingHome Bleaching has produced some very exciting results. An impression is taken of the teeth to be treated and a custom tray is made. It is a thin clear custom flexible mouthguard; a tooth shade is selected for future comparison and a container of bleaching material is given to the patient with instructions. The bleaching agent is applied by the patient to the tray, which in turn holds the bleaching gel against the teeth. This should be done 1 or 2 times per day. It can be done at the patients pace. 7 to 14 days of this procedure normally produces substantial whitening of the teeth. A few hours of touch-up might be required on a somewhat regular basis. Some variables do exist: Very dark teeth stained from tetracycline antibiotics will not whiten a great deal but smokers, coffee, tea, cola and red wine drinkers notice improvements. The practice monitors the progress of the bleaching. We recommend this approach over dental office bleaching because it offers lower costs, patient control, effectiveness, and safety. Fillings, crowns, bonding, caps, etc. cannot be whitened by these procedures. Therefore, bleaching is normally done before restorations are placed. |
